Conference Features

Conference Competitions

One of our goals for the 2018 Region VI Conference is that professionals and students get the most out of their SROW experience. It is important to us that every facet of SROW is grounded in an educational process. Each competition allows our institutions to display their school pride; as well, competitions provide an opportunity for orientation staffs to come together as a team. Competitions include:

Graduate Symposium
Join us for the Region VI Graduate Symposium held on Saturday, March 17, 2018 during Educational Session blocks 1-3. Pre-registration is required and will be available as an option in the SROW registration form. There is no additional cost to participate in the Graduate Symposium.

Concerned you will be missing out on the opportunity to present or participate in case study because you are participating in the Symposium?  No need! We will coordinate schedules to allow for graduate students to present in other Education Session blocks as well as provide time for graduate students to work on case study presentations! For more information please contact Kris Klann or Genna Martella.

Undergraduate Initiatives & Activities
While the SROW 2018 Conference will feature a lot of educational opportunities, it will also have many social opportunities. From the moment students arrive they will showcase their institutional pride in a roll call in front of thousands of their closest SROW friends. On Saturday night students will be able to socialize and get to know one another in a wide-range of activities. Additionally, an iZone will be set-up for those students looking for a place to escape the cheers and excitement or catch up on their studies. More details to come in the weeks leading up to the conference. For more information about undergraduate initiatives please contact Jourdan Harmon and Albert Perera.

Service Project
At the heart of every SROW attendee is the desire to better our home campuses and our host institution. For 2018, the Region VI Conference Committee is continuing to look at ways that we can connect service both at home and away.  We are still getting ready to launch the service project, but check back soon for more information. For questions about the service project, please contact James Kelly

Conference Competitions

S3D: Song, Skit, and Dance Competition

Song, Skit, Step and Dance has been a long-standing tradition for the Region VI Conference. We are excited to continue to develop this favorite tradition of the conference. Registration deadline is 5 p.m. EST/4 p.m. CST, Wednesday, February 21, 2018. No late registrations will be accepted.

Performing groups must submit their performance audio via email to Tim King and Tara McWhorter by 5 p.m. EST/4 p.m. CST, Friday, March 2, 2018. Please contact them with any questions as well.

T-Shirt and Banner Competition
The T-Shirt and Banner Competitions are SROW traditions. Institutions participating in this competition will sign-up during the registration process. Only one person per institution has to sign up. Both T-Shirt and Banner will offer two categories for competition: General Themed T-Shirt/Banner and SROW-Themed T-Shirt/Banner. T-Shirts must be submitted in XL size. For questions regarding these competitions, please contact Krishna PatelSpecific rules for the T-Shirt and Banner Competition will be posted here at a later date.

Spirit Competition
All of the institutions in Region VI are deeply rooted in tradition, and school pride is a way of life. During SROW, attendees will have an opportunity to vote for other SROW institutions that best display Spirit. New this year will be specific voting guidelines that help advisors and professionals guide their schools through the voting process. Spirit is measured not only on energy and pride, but also in the way institutions carry themselves, how they boost those around them, how they take care of the host’s campus, and other measures. Winners will be awarded by delegation size: small, medium, and large. More information and rules will be made available leading up to and during the conference. For questions regarding the spirit competition, please contact Krishna Patel

Case Study

Now a SROW Tradition, the Case Study Competition is designed to challenge undergraduate and graduate students by applying their experience, training, and critical thinking skills to examine complex issues within the realm of orientation.  Students will be asked to work in pairs to discern major players, themes and possible solutions in a timed presentation.  The Case Study Competition is judged by a panel of professionals, and awards will be given at the undergraduate and graduate level for "Best Problem Solving,” "Best Communication,” and "Best Overall Presentation” which will be announced at the Closing Session.

If you are interested in competing, you must attend the required participant meeting on Friday evening of the conference where the competition format will be shared, as well as assign students to groups and answer any questions.  During this meeting those interested in competing who do not already have a partner will be paired with another competitor looking for a match.  The competition is limited to one undergraduate and one graduate team per institution.

Pre-registration is preferred but not required; to pre-register please note those students competing via the registration form.  For more information please contact Chris Landry or Steven Thomas
