Happy New Year NODA

A Message from the 2018 NODA President: Quincy D. Spencer

As we start a new year, I am excited to begin my term as President of our Association.  NODA has been my professional home for almost 15 years, and I am continually encouraged by the enthusiasm and passion that our members have for orientation, transition, and retention programs. This past November in Louisville, we celebrated the 70th anniversary of meeting as orientation professionals and our 40th anniversary as an Association. These two milestones truly signify the important role that we play in the realm of higher education and the impact that our work has on the student transition and retention process on campuses across the world. Thank you for all that you do!

Over the next year there will be many new initiatives that the Association will be taking on and will impact you as a member. This would not happen without the hard work of our member volunteers, board of directors, and Association staff. Below are two significant initiatives that will forever change the way that we function as an Association.

NODA Excellence Fund
In Louisville, we announced the creation of the NODA Excellence Fund to provide scholarships and opportunities for professionals and graduate students to receive high-quality training and experiences through NODA. During the conference, over $16,000 was pledged to the fund. Scholarships for opportunities for the regional conferences are now taking applications. If you would like to support the fund, or apply for a scholarship, visit the NODA Excellence Fund page on the NODA website.

OTR Knowledge Community
Recently a group of members petitioned NASPA to form an Orientation, Transition, and Retention Knowledge Community. With support from NODA, the petition was accepted and the new Knowledge Community is currently being created. This is an exciting opportunity for members in both of our associations, and I want to personally thank Shawn Smee (Murray State University), NODA Past-President and Bethany Naser (University of South Carolina) for serving as inaugural Co-Chairs of the group.

I hope that 2018 is a great year for you and your campus. I look forward to leading our Association as we work to address several new areas and provide you with new opportunities. Please do not hesitate to contact me at qspencer@uark.edu if you have any questions or want to discuss how you can make a greater impact to our Association.

With NODA Pride,

Quincy D. Spencer
President, NODA Association for Orientation, Transition, and Retention in Higher Education
