The news of these guilty verdicts comes when our nation continues to struggle with unjust acts by police on the lives of Black and Brown individuals. These guilty verdicts are only one aspect that might bring some sense of accountability to George Floyd and his family. The present juncture is set to the backdrop of nationwide legislative actions denying transgender children and their families appropriate access to medical care; continuing hate speech and violence toward members of Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander communities; and exacerbated by yet another death of a young Black man, Daunte Wright, in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota.

The compounding effects of reliving the images and sounds of George Floyd’s death throughout the Chauvin trial and the other senseless acts of violence toward communities of color will have a lasting impact on our society. Chauvin’s trial highlights the opportunities our society has and needs to advance systemic change of the institutions meant to protect us. It calls us to create change in ourselves to unlearn and lean into learning, to transform our programs and services to best meet the needs of our students from underrepresented identities.

We are responsible as educators to actively resist, speak out, and act against injustices happening in our society, association, and on our campuses. To do nothing is not an option, as inaction means life or death for members of our community. The reality is that Black and Brown lives will continue to be valued less than those who identify as White. Justice is only served when we acknowledge and dismantle the systemic barriers of racism and its impact on society.

NODA will continue to provide you with opportunities to engage in the process of creating a more equitable society. The new year for many symbolizes an opportunity to recommit yourself to the behaviors that provide a more purposeful and intentional life experience. It is also true for NODA to do the same, as we have newly elected and appointed leaders beginning terms this January.

Over the winter break, I took the opportunity to read two books: The Post-Pandemic Liberal Arts College by Steven Volk and Beth Benedix and The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. These two texts provided space for me to reflect on myself and the commitments that I have made to the community of learners for whom I serve. Two specific parallels align with our work as orientation, transition, and retention professionals: creating a new imaginary toward a culture that values the strengths and talents of our community (faculty, staff, and students), and getting real about our individual and collective roles in systems that derail our efforts toward a more equitable and inclusive environment.

We have an intellectually rich, highly creative, and thoughtful membership. If anything, this past year demonstrated that and reaffirmed the tenacity and resilience of our members. To share some examples: shifting from an annual in-person conference to a virtual annual conference, hosting various affinity spaces to support our members, the beginning of strategic planning for the Association, and electing our first Equity and Inclusion Officer. These examples highlight the committed, collaborative, and caring approach our members have to the Association and our profession.

I also want to acknowledge that we cannot rest here. As we all know too well, the pandemic has highlighted opportunities and gaps that we need to address. This year will require us to make thoughtful and bold decisions to point the Association in the best direction post-pandemic while staying true to our core values and beliefs.

I want to reiterate the goals that I shared during the closing session of the 2020 Annual Conference.

Reinforce our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

Ensure the sustainability of our Association through and beyond the pandemic

Focus our efforts on building an even stronger community of members

I hope these goals lead us — to borrow the words of Volk and Benedix (2020), to “reject assimilation in favor of meeting people where they are, then building value from each individual’s lived experiences”(p. 73) — to cultivating a professional community of learners charged with creating a dynamic and inclusive experience for our institutional programs and our NODA community.

I am excited by the Association’s possibilities and the breadth of talent to guide us. They seek nominations from leadership and the current membership and screen applicants to produce an intentionally diverse pool of candidates for all elected positions that are qualified for service and able to advance the work of the Association. It’s safe to say that this ‘Back to School’ season is far different than we could have possibly imagined. Many of us may still feel a bit unsettled ourselves, even as we work to help new students acclimate to our campuses amid this new, hopefully temporary ‘normal’. One thing is for sure: the occurrences of the last few months have made our work more complex and perhaps even more meaningful. As always, we are here to support you. To that end, today I’d like to highlight the importance of gathering insights that enable you to deliver the most value to your students, their families, your staff and institutions.

Understanding student needs is now more than ever.

From national social justice protests to public health concerns, this year’s new students are entering with additional stressors than previous classes. Many students and their families will want to provide feedback on their current realities. Assessments can help you gain the critical insights needed to impact student success, acclimation to campus, and retention, particularly in light of the shifting needs created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Supporting students, their families and staff amid challenges requires insight.

Nothing is routine. What remains unaltered is the immense value in understanding the needs and sentiments of students and the staff who support them. The questions we find ourselves asking may change as we uncover needs related to the impact of issues like learning online, health concerns, and social movements on our campuses and around the country. However, the imperative of gathering feedback (and using that insight to drive the work we do) remains. Insight from students, their families and your staff, can help you better support students in developing a sense of belongingness and engagement, particularly in times of immense change.

Validating effectiveness and value of orientation is critical.

Research and data are critical for effectively communicating the value and results of our work, especially as many institutions face leaner budgets, staffing changes and in some instances, questions about the value of your orientation program. In the spring, the committee tackled the financial impact of cancelling many of our regional conferences and how the Association could go about refunding participants a portion of their conference fees. In addition, the committee worked with the Association staff to develop an operating budget for the next year which accounts for the impacts of the global pandemic. The committee is pleased to share the Board has approved this operating budget during their summer meeting.
NODA Board Meeting Highlights - August 2020

The NODA Board of Directors held a Summer Virtual Board Meeting August 4 and August 7, 2020.

The Board held two 3 hour meetings to receive updates and conduct strategic conversations.

Annual Conference

The Board started with an update for the 2020 Annual Conference and reviewed a draft schedule. The
Board was impressed with how quickly the Conference Program Committee put together a virtual
conference schedule and plans for engagement.

Regional Conferences

There were several factors that came into play during the strategic discussions related to Regional
Conferences. Concerns were raised over state regulations with an active pandemic, safety and health of
NODA members and students, travel restrictions and the importance of creating community. The Board
passed a motion that there would not be any in-person Regional Conference. The Board asked the
Association Office to seek members to apply to assist with planning regional events.

Budget Scenario Planning

A financial overview was presented to the Board highlighting the year end expenses for Fiscal Year
2019/20. Preliminary numbers were presented with the intent to provide a final report by Fall 2020. The
Association received a Paycheck Protection Program loan with the goal to request “forgiveness” by the
end of the calendar year. A “worst case” Scenario Budget was presented to the Board will all events
being virtual, revenue significantly reduced with limited expenses. The Board approved the budget with

Message from NODA Equity and Inclusion Officer

<span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: " times="" new="" roman="" ";=" " color:=" " rgb(0,=" " 0,=" " 0);=" " font-variant-numeric:=" " normal;=" " font-variant-east-asian:=" " vertical-align:=" " baseline;=" " white-space:=" " pre-wrap;"="">Colleagues,

<span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: " times="" new="" roman="" ";=" " color:=" " rgb(0,=" " 0,=" " 0);=" " font-variant-numeric:=" " normal;=" " font-variant-east-asian:=" " vertical-align:=" " baseline;=" " white-space:=" " pre-wrap;"="">I hope that you are each well and that you have found some time for self-care, reflection and simply some relaxation in what I know is such a busy season for many of us! I know that for me this time has been met with a seesaw of emotions between being at home working and being able to be with my family all while reflecting on my privilege of being able to work from home. I have also spent so much time processing our national climate and the impacts it has on my family, friends, students, and colleagues, not only the Black Lives Matter movement, but also the direct attack on our visa holding students studying in the United States.

<span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: " times="" new="" roman="" ";=" " color:=" " rgb(0,=" " 0,=" " 0);=" " font-variant-numeric:=" " normal;=" " font-variant-east-asian:=" " vertical-align:=" " baseline;=" " white-space:=" " pre-wrap;"="">In that reflection time I have concluded that our work matters more now than likely ever before! You might be thinking yes, our work as orientation, transition and retention practitioners always matters and even more so now. But, aside from our collective orientation, transition and retention work, I am speaking to our self-work, the work that arguably is harder than our day to day work in the “office”. Our self-work at a time like this is what matters most!

<span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: " times="" new="" roman="" ";=" " color:=" " rgb(0,=" " 0,=" " 0);=" " font-variant-numeric:=" " normal;=" " font-variant-east-asian:=" " vertical-align:=" " baseline;=" " white-space:=" " pre-wrap;"="">How are we reflecting, digesting, critically thinking, and questioning our selves at a time like this? How are we doing the self-work to be able to do the work that we are called to do? How do we lean into the difficult self-reflection(s) about our own power, privilege, social identities both visible and invisible?

<span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: " times="" new="" roman="" ";=" " color:=" " rgb(0,=" " 0,=" " 0);=" " font-variant-numeric:=" " normal;=" " font-variant-east-asian:=" " vertical-align:=" " baseline;=" " white-space:=" " pre-wrap;"="">I like to use this model below that I created to help translate the work of diversity, equity and inclusion. The top of the triangle calls us to do the self-work mentioned above to be able to then move forward and think about how your identities, both visible and invisible, influence those around you, your work, how you show up and much more. Then moving on to thinking about how you can use your identities to impact communities and spaces or how your identities impact those, always keeping in mind that your identities carry society norms, impacts, influence, bias, etc.

Letter from NODA President, Heather Kovanic

Dear NODA members,

As I write this from my kitchen table at home, I reflect on what a whirlwind these last few weeks have been for me, and I am certain for you as well. Our world and our work in orientation, transition, and retention have changed dramatically. These rapid, and at times daily, changes have been overwhelming, and as we are leading campus transitions, we are also navigating them for ourselves. I know that you are doing incredible work, and I hope you are also able to take time to reflect and rest.

Together as NODA members, we will get through these difficult moments, and we will do what we do best – share new strategies to tackle challenges; engage in rich conversation about how to serve students and families; and encourage each other personally and professionally. Many of my most important and valued relationships are those I share with NODA members and friends. These are the people who have already helped me make sense of what’s happening and what we are being asked to do to reimagine our OTR programming; more importantly, these are the people who send an email or text to check in to make sure I’m doing okay or make me laugh.

Over the past two weeks, I have been inspired by the NODA Association staff and the efforts of many NODA members in our regions and networks to provide a variety of timely resources and opportunities to connect. While much of what we value from our NODA involvement are the in-person networking and training opportunities for us as staff, and especially for our students, I hope that you choose to engage in our community virtually as we all navigate the new normal. It has been awesome to see so many of you already taking advantage of these virtual connections! Stay tuned to NODAfications in your email and actively read the messages shared through NODA Connect to get involved with one another.

The NODA community is incredibly strong, and I hope that it empowers and sustains you as you navigate all that’s ahead. I encourage you to reach out to Joyce Holl, NODA’s Executive Director at holl@umn.edu with your ideas or thoughts about how we can best help you during this time, and know that as your President, I am honored and grateful to be part of the NODA community with you.

Be well,

Leadership Spotlight: Johnathan Luster

Assistant Dean of Student Affairs
University of California, San Diego
Current Leadership Position: Board Member

Why was getting involved in NODA important to you?
Initially, I became involved to network and learn more about national
trends that could inform my work. More recently, I have looked to NODA
to develop skills that would have been more difficult to hone on my home
campuses. For instance, serving on the NODAC 2012 Planning Committee
allowed me to participate in national working groups (which helped me to
understand how to collaborate virtually across many time zones), to
build a mobile app from scratch, and to coordinate large, complex
audiovisual elements. The lessons and abilities I learned as part of
this group were unique to that experience; similar opportunities would
have been more difficult to find on my home campus at the time. Click here to read the entire interview.

When and why did you join NODA?
I attended my first NODA Regional Conference in 2003 when I was an
undergraduate student at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The
positive, challenging, and rewarding experience I had as an Orientation
Leader led to a Graduate Assistantship in orientation at Miami
University, Ohio, where I continued my involvement with NODA. I became a
professional member in 2007 and have maintained my membership and
involvement since then. The knowledge I have gained; networking
opportunities available; and abilities to develop professionally and
personally have made NODA a wonderful fit with the roles I have held and
campuses I have represented over the years.

Why should a member consider a leadership position in NODA?
There are many, many benefits to stepping into a NODA leadership
position. What's exciting about the current volunteer landscape with
NODA is that there are diverse opportunities available depending on what
one might be looking for. In addition to the reward of giving back to
the Association and the field of OTR, I have found that drawing upon my
experiences with NODA has set me apart from other candidates in job
interview processes. Particularly for younger professionals searching
for ways to develop and stand out, becoming more involved with NODA is
an excellent investment with a high return. Our field is small and
folks are impressed by those who give back in meaningful ways.

What have you gained from your leadership positions in NODA?
Perhaps the most significant attribute I have gained is expertise. I
mean this in terms of trust I have been given on my home campuses based
on my involvement with NODA. Before I stepped into leadership
positions, I knew how to orient students effectively and had a broad
understanding of the landscape of OTR. The difference now is that it is
much easier to convince others to buy into changes I recommend or that
we are on the right path because I can draw from lessons learned in
leadership positions and have access to more complex, meaningful
language. While I used to be in the defensive position of convincing
others to support OTR ideas, the change I have noticed is that these
NODA leadership positions have offered me accelerated credibility that
would otherwise take many more years to earn.

What is your favorite NODA related memory?
Some of my favorite memories come from time with my partner in crime on
the NODAC 2012 Planning Committee: Damien Snook. We shared
responsibility for marketing and publications and due to a slip up on a
conference call the two of us were coined as "Jamien." It was a
wonderful experience learning how to work closely with someone prior to
meeting them in-person and we became a very effective team, plus we had a
blast working together. From having that awkward moment talking about a
proposed conference logo design that also resembled...something
inappropriate to running complex technology during the conference on our
dinosaur MacBooks hoping they wouldn't crash, I look back on our work
together and grin.

the conference and to see everything come together was both satisfying
and empowering.

NODA Leader: Maria Sedotti
Director Orientation Services/Liaison UConn Parent
University of Connecticut

Why was getting involved in NODA important to you?
Getting involved in NODA was especially important to me so that I could
learn about the profession first-hand from the only association that
specialized in the profession. The association provided opportunities
for me to network with colleagues in the field and to exchange
information to improve and enhance the orientation programs at UConn, it also keeps me updated with new developments in the field of
Orientation, Transition and Retention. During my time in NODA I have
been able to connect with orientation professionals that I call my
mentors to this very day. They helped me shape the orientation program
at the University of Connecticut, and for that I am truly grateful.

When and why did you get involved with NODA?
I joined NODA in 1986 when I was a PhD student with a graduate assistantship in the orientation office.

Why should a member consider a leadership position in NODA?
A member should consider a leadership position in NODA because it not
only involves but also challenges them to become involved in the field
on a national level. It is a wonderful way to meet so many other
colleagues in the orientation, transition and retention field who reside
in and outside the U.S. It also gives them the opportunity to help the
Association improve and grow. It is a wonderful way to help the association and also to develop professionally.

What have you gained from your leadership positions in NODA?
From being in NODA leadership positions I have gained many professional
contacts in the field located all over the country and in Canada who
have become friends and mentors to me. It is very easy for me to email
or call a colleague if I have an issue, need advice or want to learn
what they are doing in orientation at their institution. I would never
have been able to do this if I was not involved in NODA leadership
positions. I have also gained an abundance of knowledge about the
field of Orientation, Transition and Retention through that networking.
Being involved in a leadership position has made me more appreciative
of the orientation field. I have also gained satisfaction in knowing
that I am helping the association in their strategic plan. Finally, I
have been in the field of Orientation for over 26 years, and assuming a
new leadership position helps re-spark my enthusiasm for the field
because it is challenging me and making me meet new members of the
association. How exciting is that!

What is your favorite NODA related memory?
I have many favorite NODA memories. The majority of these memories
focus on spending time with longstanding NODA colleagues during the
national conferences.

me.

When and why did you get involved with NODA?
I joined NODA in 1999, when I started doing Orientation on our campus. I

grounded my thinking about the importance and responsibility associated
with being a Board Member.

Leadership Spotlight: Ella Weaver

& resources I have gained from the Association. I definitely wanted
to be able to give back in any way that I could. I also think that the
work we do on our campuses is important and hope that the increasing the
strength of NODA will help us do that work better. So in the end, it is
about our campuses and our students and ensuring that we are doing the
best for them as they are now but also preparing for who they will be
and what they will need in the future.

When and why did you get involved with NODA?
I joined as a graduate student in 2003. At the time I was working in
Student Organizations but knew that I wanted to get some experience in
orientation. My supervisor gave me permission to use my professional
development funds that year to travel to the NODA Annual Conference in Seattle. It was the
best decision of my professional career. I made so many connections at
that conference that allowed me to develop relationships with some great
mentors and introduced me to the many opportunities within NODA for
graduate students.

Why should a member consider a leadership position in NODA?
Other than giving back to the Association and making an impact on the
field of OTR, there is great personal and professional gain to be had
from involvement in NODA. Personally, you will develop a wonderful
network of colleagues, mentors and friends that make this field seem
even more like home. Professionally, you will be exposed to
responsibilities and ideas that you may not be exposed to in your full
time job and gain new skills that you wouldn't otherwise have an
opportunity to practice.

What have you gained from your leadership positions in NODA?
I have absolutely gained that network of mentors and friends. I can pick
up the phone anytime and reach out to a colleague anywhere in the
country about a new issues I am dealing with on my campus, a specific
problem I am addressing with students or a quick chat about the
inevitable frustrations that occur in any job. I have also gained
exposure to finances and budgeting, strategic planning, and
collaborating with people from varied backgrounds to accomplish a major
project. Each of these has enhanced the work I am doing at Auburn
University.

What is your favorite NODA related memory?
There are so many, but I have to go back to the original - serving on
the 2005 Annual Conference (Miami) Committee. It was my introduction to involvement in
a professional association and what an introduction it was! I felt a
bit like an undergraduate again with the long hours, late nights, early
mornings and tons of laughs. It was so rewarding to see a successful
final product with very tangible results. I would also say this past
fall when I finished my term on the Board of Directors. We had
experienced so many changes in the previous three years and the
Association in some ways looked completely different. It was incredibly
exciting to look back on the change but to also look forward and think
about where I wanted to go next. Where would my skills be best put to
use and what was I excited to work on? It felt like turning a page.
